We set out to create an informative yet cinematic onboarding experience for those entering Immersive View for the first time, where they would learn how to navigate Google Maps like they’ve never done before. Unity︎︎︎AWE Auggie Awards︎︎︎ UploadVR︎︎︎ Onboarding starts at 27:30 Project insights ︎︎︎ Challenge User testing showed first-time users struggled with novel hand-tracking gestures (pinching, zooming, dragging), causing friction before they could experience Immersive View. ︎︎︎ Hypothesis An interactive, narrative-driven tutorial would make gesture learning intuitive. Tying controls to dynamic environmental feedback enables natural learning through active discovery rather than passive instruction. ︎︎︎ Approach We framed onboarding as a cinematic journey with the Earth and Sun as visual anchors. We started to incorporate photography provided by the client, but felt that the imagery did not represent the vibes in a broad enough manner. Spotify’s latest experience aimed to tap into that sense of nostalgia with “Playlist in a Bottle”, an in-app and web experience that allows you to create a playlist, only to be locked away until January 2024. We (Active Theory) partnered with Spotify to help bring their concept to life with a sticky, and delightful digital experience.
